Midwifery and Medicare

The determination of Medicare eligibility for private practice midwifery services has both strengths and weaknesses. While it offers, for the first time in Australia, the opportunity for women choosing private-midwifery to receive at least some governmental support, the requirements placed on Midwives wishing to offer Medicare rebates are large.

In addition, debate still rages on the measures of governmental control being applied to private-practice midwives, the effect of these controls on each woman’s right to choose their care provider, and the resultant quality of service provision. This section of our site aims to explore these issues, as well as provide useful information for midwives seeking Medicare eligibility or attempting to resolve implementation issues.
