My girlfriend with the age of 22 from malta will birth on the 17th Dec this year... she has the medicare card to cover all the expenses for child birth...

Does she need to open something like a book, in the public hospital ?

Regards, Vincent.

Sep 3, 2012 4:48pm [ 2 ]

Hi, Vincent yes, she need to make a booking visit at the hospital close to your home around 18-20 weeks to be officially booked into that hospital. If she is over this gestation, still can do a booking visit at the hospital then they will arrange proper follow up visits. Good luck

Hi Am pregnant now in 31 days , when I can make a booking to see a doctor in the hospital ? Last period finished in 27/7/2012 and didn't come again and I made blood test in medical center and everything alright but am vomiting everyday between 3 - 5 times what can I do? And I can't smell anything This first pregnancy for me

Thank you

Nano you can ring the hospital to try to make an appointment (you will need a referral first). Alternatively you can see a midwife or doctor in the community for pregnancy care and advice. Midwives are available at the PBB Health Centre

Apr 30, 2013 1:24am [ 13 ]

I have just found out I am pregnant and am 10 weeks. I have private health insurance but I don't want to go private and be out of pocket the 4k-5k.

I live in Padstow and my local hospital Is bankstown and Auburn. I would prefer to have my baby at RPAH or POW or even the women's hospital at randwick. Can I do this as a public patient or is that a no because I am Out of area!

Any help you could provide would be great or point me in the right direction.

Apr 30, 2013 7:41am [ 14 ]

Hi Danielle - You will not be able to go to RPAH as they only accept women in their boundary. Prince of Wales is a private hospital so you need to go as a private patient to go there. You can contact the Royal Hospital for Women - they may accept women out of area.

Nov 28, 2013 9:02pm [ 24 ]

Hi. We are moving from UK to Sydney in March 2014. I'll be around 21 weeks pregnant by then. Don't know where to start and what to do when we come. A bit lost and scared. Just wondered if you could help with any advice on what my first steps should be when we get there ( do i need to contact nearest hospital or GP ). We already have one child born through c section ( face presentation), would I be able to give birth naturally there. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Nov 30, 2013 5:57am [ 25 ]

Hi Inga - It is a very big step moving countries in pregnancy. I understand that you are feeling uncertain. Do you know what suburb of Sydney you will be living in? If you are not too far away you can make an appointment to see me and I can go through your options and make a referral. Otherwise I would make contact with a local GP who can make an appropriate referral.

Dec 4, 2013 11:57pm [ 26 ]

Hi. My girlfriend is nearly 9 weeks pregnant, and by a bit of bad luck we are due to be flying to Sydney from the UK (where we live) to visit family for 3 weeks over christmas exactly when her 12 week scan is due. The window for the scan starts on Dec 28th/29th. We will be staying in the Clareville / Avalon area, can you recommend how we can best proceed to get this scan booked in? Just discovered the date issue this morning so frantically trying to work something out today! We'd be hugely grateful for any info/advice you could offer. Many thanks.
Dec 7, 2013 1:04pm [ 27 ]

Hi Bill - you will need a referral from a midwife or doctor here in Australia to organise the ultrasound. I would suggest getting in contact with a midwife or doctor close to the area you will be staying. They can advise you which ultrasonographer that they prefer. You should be able to book the appointment for the scan before you leave on your holiday and get the referral once you are here. I hope this helps

I had IVF from an overseas hospital and now I am 24 weeks pregnant with twins ( I am Aussie citizen). I am still in overseas and they advised to travel back to Australia around 28/29th weeks. I live in Sydney area (Old Toongabbie). Which hospital I need to go upon my return from overseas? Is public system okay for twin pregnancy?

Jane Palmer
Feb 8, 2014 6:47am [ 33 ]

Hi Sasi - Westmead Public Hospital is your local hospital. It is a level 5 hospital (the highest level) with appropriate facilities for giving birth to twins. You can go either as a public and private patient. You can choose to go through the public clinic which is no cost through Medicare care. Or choose a private midwife who works with a collaborative obstetrician (call 9890 7755 and ask to speak to me if you'd like to find out more about this option)or just an obstetrician.

Hi Everyone

My wife is 25 and she will give birth around November-December. We have Private Health Insurance so we want to go Private Hopsital care and the closest hospital that offers private care seems to be Canterbury. Just wanted to know how the care and facilities are for child birth. Does anyone have any experiences or stories about the care and facilities at Canterbury Private?

Thanks everyone

Hi Jane, I live in Eastwood, and I gave a birth to my boy at Royal North Shore Public Hospital 3 years ago, I was very pleased with the care , support and professionalism of the staff I came across with. The problem is we are moving to Ropes Crossing( Near St Marys) in December, which means I will have to go to Blacktown Hospital for my next delivery. Can you please share with me your thoughts of the hospital specifically the Maternity unit and facilities, is it a lot worse compare to the RNSH? Thank You

I am currently 23 weeks pregnant. I am currently using the GP/ public hospital shared care for Westmead public hospital. I have health insurance and was wondering if I could tick the box for private patient in public hospital when I get admitted for the birth. If so, does that mean I can spend more days in hospital to get more help and assistance? rather than having to be discharged day of or day after the birth.

Feb 24, 2015 1:17am [ 65 ]

I am originally from Sydney, but i have been living in Germany for the last 3 years. We are planning to move back into the Inner West (within the RPA zoning). If i come back pregnant, is it possible for me to make a booking from abroad or do we need to have a place of residence within the zone?

I can resume my health insurance and go private, but i am just not sure if it is worth our while if i can have the same treatment in a public hospital.

I am having twins and will deliver my twins at Royal Women Hospital Randwick. Just wondering, would the public system sufficient for my situation? As I have a lot of friends commenting that it's best to have private OB, yet I am still serving another 9 months waiting period of my private health insurance.

Hi My wife is 14 weeks pregnant, and we are living in Macquarie Park. Could my wife go to RNH instead Ryde Hospital?

There may be a case if our new apartment settle in Wentworth Point, then could we go Westmead Hospital instead Auburn? Thanks a lot for help.

Hi I am live in Beleose and 5 weeks pregnant, I want to go public and prefer Rnsh. I have Laiden factor V and need to be on Clexane for the whole pregnancy. Is there anyway I can go through the birthing clinic or attend Rnsh instead of Mona vale? Is monavale any good compared to north shore?

Hi. My husband and I are hoping to try for a baby this year. I have epilepsy, so I have been very organised prior to conceiving due to risks associated with one of the medications that I am on. I live in Greenacre NSW and one of the my GP has suggested I get private health insurance because he would prefer I go to RPA and he is unsure if my area is in the RPA catchment. I was hoping you could advise me what hospital I would be sent to so that my husband and I can make some decisions moving forward.

Hi, I'm a student midwife interested in doing my elective placement in a maternity hospital in Sydney. I will be there for 3 weeks working and plan on staying for a couple of more weeks to explore and travel more. I do not know the city at all and I was just wondering where would be the best area of hospitals to get in touch with? Thanks:)
